Three female students have been shortlisted to win the prestigious design competition staged annually by Birmingham casting house Weston Beamor, in conjunction with the School of Jewellery, Birmingham City University (BCU).

The winner of the competition will be announced on Tuesday 7 February at 2.30 pm on the Weston Beamor stand in Hall 17, Stand P44-Q45, at the Jewellery Show, Birmingham. The shortlisted three – Hannah Kimber, Sophie Newman and Sophie Symes – will join fellow students and university staff and directors of Weston Beamor, to discover who has won the first prize of £500 and the opportunity to have a week's work experience within the firm. The second and third place students will receive £250 and £150 respectively.

The brief for this year's competition was to design a commercial piece of jewellery with a particular target audience in mind. To show the thinking behind their entries, students were required to submit not only their final design solutions, which had to be created using Matrix CAD software, but also their market research, mood boards, concept development and an appropriate advertisement.

The competition was judged by Naomi Newton Sherlock, head of new product development at Weston Beamor's sister company, Domino; group managing director Andrew Morton; and Ed Hole, who is bespoke CAD/RP co-ordinator at Weston Beamor.

Prototypes of all three shortlisted designs are currently in production at Weston Beamor and will be unveiled on the company's stand at the Jewellery Show.
