Pete Seeger marked his 60th birthday by raising money for cancer. The jeweller, who lives in Meols, originally pledged to raise £5,000 by taking part in a 200-mile cycle along the Nile, but finished the journey as Clatterbridge Cancer Research's fundraiser of the year, after having raised £14,800.
Pete said that he received tremendous support from the local rugby community, as well as his boss, Haywood Milton, and work colleagues at the Milton's Jewellers stores in Chester, Birkenhead and Liverpool, who all sponsored the cycle.
"I got involved in working for Clatterbridge Cancer Research because my former wife was diagnosed with cancer. She was successfully treated but I stayed involved in raising money for research because so many people are touched by the disease."
The executive team at the charity arrived at Milton's in Birkenhead to surprise Pete with his fundraiser of the year award, along with a celebration cake. Director at Clatterbridge Cancer Research, Jo Parry, said: "It's people like Pete who have helped this charity find the funding to continue the fight against cancer year on year. Without the time, commitment and effort of our fundraisers we couldn't make the advances we are making or resource one of the best teams of specialist research scientists in the country. We are so grateful; he's been amazing."
