The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) has announced that Argos, the multi-channel retailer, has achieved certification by meeting the ethical, human rights, social and environmental standards as established by the RJC's Member Certification System.

"Argos is delighted to become an officially certified member of the Responsible Jewellery Council, and we believe this reflects our commitment to the principles and guidelines set out by the RJC," said Mark Steel, Argos's trading manager for jewellery and watches.

News of the certification followed an announcement from the British Jewellers' Association (BJA) that it is supporting Argos's 'meet the buyers' initiative, which aims to attract jewellery designers and smaller producers to present their products at an informal event on 10 January, at the Jury's Inn in Milton Keynes. As part of its ongoing journey to keep product ranges "fresh and exciting," Argos is keen to engage with UK jewellery designers and producers to introduce more inspiration and customer choice to its jewellery proposition.

Mark Steel said: "Jewellery has been a big part of our business since the early days, and we are passionate about offering our millions of customers contemporary designs at affordable prices. We want to unlock British jewellery design talent and give designers the opportunity to reach these customers, so we are very excited about our 'meet the buyers' event.

Simon Rainer, chief executive of the BJA, added: "We are pleased that our ongoing commitment in helping BJA members take their products to market is greatly aided by Argos's strong desire to work with new designers and small producers. I look forward to a very successful outcome and am heartened that Argos also sees the event as being an opportunity to provide an insight into how to work with a multiple retailer."
