9-carat gold soars 15.8% as overall hallmarking figures fall

The number of 9-carat items hallmarked in April jumped 15.8%, despite an overall decline in hallmarking figures.

The latest data from the four UK assay offices – compiled by the Birmingham Assay Office – found there was a total of 790,594 items hallmarked in April, compared with 810,831 in April 2015.

Despite the fall, 9ct continued its strong performance from last month as the number of hallmarked articles was up 15.8% to 309,547 – up from 267,326 in April last year. The number of 14-carat gold items also grew 4.1%.

Gold hallmarking, which grew 6.1% during the month to 427,637 items, was largely carried by 9ct as 22ct and 18ct fell 24.4% and 8.1%, respectively.

Silver reported a fall of 11.6% as the number of hallmarked items fell 43,058, while platinum hallmarking was down by 1,714 items or 6.3%. Palladium also reported a decline of 1.9% to 10,351 items.
