Hallmarking up 3.1% in May

The total number of hallmarked articles in May grew by 3.1% compared with the same time last year, according to new figures released from all four of the UK’s assay offices. 

According to the data, which was compiled by the Birmingham Assay Office, there was a total of 770,075 articles hallmarked last month, compared with 746,880 in May last year- an increase of 23,195 articles.

Gold continued its strong performance with 9-carat experiencing an increase of 3.7%, while 14-carat gold was up 20.4%. Overall the total number of gold articles hallmarked was up 1.6%.

It was also a strong month for silver as total of 26,790 more articles were hallmarked across all categories, representing an increase of 7.6%.

Despite this, the total number of platinum and palladium articles hallmarked was decreased, down 13.8% and 40.5% respectively.
