Laing Edinburgh secures £1.3m relocation

Independent jeweller Laing Edinburgh is set for a £1.3m relocation to Edinburgh’s exclusive George Street – fulfilling a lifelong dream for chairman Michael Laing.

The jewellers, which is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year, has agreed terms to move into 72 George Street, formerly occupied by Barclays Bank, and is investing £1.3m in the fit-out and redesign of the premises.

Work on the refurbishment of the store will begin in August, with the company due to relocate from its existing 29 Frederick Street shop. The second Lain Edinburgh store on 25 Frederick Street will remain in its current location.

Laing said: “Opening our new flagship showroom on the corner of George Street and Frederick Street is the fulfilment of a dream. This property is the perfect setting for us. We have been looking for the right location for Laing on George Street for many years now, but suitable properties don’t often come onto the market.”

He said that it wasn’t just step forward Laing’s but also for the city, commenting that the luxury store in a key location will attract international visitors and reinforce Edinburgh’s reputation as a leading shopping destination.

The new store will include two floors which will be connected by a cast iron and glass staircase, along with an in-house workshop with a team of craftsmen and specialist designers.

Laing added: “We are currently looking at expansion possibilities throughout the UK, as well as expanding our digital store presence.”
