Hallmarking has dropped 1.9 per cent on last year according to The Birmingham Assay Office 2013 hallmarking figures.
The decline, compared to figures for 2012, show that the four UK Assay Offices hallmarked 9,156,858 articles in 2013 compared to 9,331,451 the previous year. This slight drop however is an improvement following 2011 which The Assay Office explains is a “significant improvement on the previous year when the level of decline was -14 per cent on the previous year.”
The Assay Offices also saw an uplift throughout the year as the price of gold started to fall, a positive trend that continued through to the end of the year. December saw a rise in the number of articles hallmarked, with a 22 per cent increase compared to December 2012.
