Five people have been arrested following an alleged armed raid which took place at a jewellery store in Whitby, North Yorkshire, last week.

The robbery took place at Gouldbuys jewellery store in Flowergate, on Friday May 1 at 12:30pm, as the Tour de Yorkshire was taking place.

Police said that a man entered the store and threatened staff with what was reported to be a gun. He then reportedly left the shop with an unknown amount of gold jewellery, leaving in the direction of Silver Street and Belle Vue Terrace and was seen getting into a small grey or blue hatchback car.

There have been no reported injuries however the staff at the store were said to have been “very shaken” by the event.

Yesterday, North Yorkshire Police arrested five people in connection with the incident including four men, two aged 18 and one aged 19 from Whitby, one aged 25 from Saltburn and a woman aged 21 from Saltburn.

All have been released on police bail while the investigation continues.

North Yorkshire Police have urged any witnesses to the incident to contact them on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
