The British Hallmarking Council (BHC) has announced that it is looking to recruit four new members.

Established by the Hallmarking Act 1973, BHC protects consumer interests in the jewellery industry by ensuring that there are adequate facilities for hallmarking in the UK and advising the Secretary of State for the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills on hallmarking matters and hallmarking legislation.

The Secretary of State is now seeking four members to serve for a term of three years, starting from January 1, 2016.

One of the vacancies will be for a member with experience in the precious metal trade or manufacturing, either from the bespoke or mass produced jewellery market, or from retailing.

Meanwhile the three other vacancies will be for members with either consumer expertise or independents with relevant experience.

Members of the council will be responsible for:

  • Working with the Assay Offices, and Trading Standards departments to ensure that hallmarking law is enforced
  • Proposing legal changes and advising the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills
  • Maintaining the high standards of the UK’s hallmarking facilities
  • Monitoring the work of the UK assay offices and their established sub-offices (including any sub-offices offshore).

Positions are not remunerated but members will be reimbursed for travel, subsistence and other “reasonable” expenses.

Applications for the role can be found on the government’s website, or via contacting Fiona Birchall on [email protected] or 020 8943 7214.
