Hallmarking falls 28.8% in February

The total number of pieces hallmarked throughout February 2021 decreased 28.8% when compared to last year, according to the latest figures from the Birmingham Assay office.
Total hallmarked pieces dropped from 536,656 in February 2020 to 375,183, with a year-on-year rate of decline lower than the 45.5% seen in January 2021.
Gold hallmarked pieces fell 27.9% from 244,558 to 176,420, up from the 168,815 hallmarked pieces in January.
Silver hallmarked pieces also dropped 28.4% to 184,112 in February, while platinum hallmarking tumbled from 24,048 to 14,500, a year-on-year slip of 39.7%.
The largest decline seen in February was palladium hallmarking, which slumped 82% from 838 to 151, beating January’s year-on-year fall of 60.6%.
