Hallmarking rises 10% in March
March’s figures provide a contrary outlook to the first quarter of 2021 as a whole, which saw total hallmarked pieces fall 25.2% when compared to Q1 2020
The total number of pieces hallmarked in March 2021 has increased 10% year-on-year, according to the latest figures from the Birmingham Assay Office.
Total hallmarked pieces climbed from 448,583 in March 2020 to 493,423 this year, representing a swing from the 28.8% year-on-year decline seen in February 2021.

Gold hallmarked pieces in March 2021 fell 5.2% from 214,697 to 226,460, showing an increase from Q1’s year-on-year decrease of 26%.
Platinum and Palladium hallmarked pieces also fell for March, representing a respective 33.4% and 82% year-on-year fall, broadly in line with their 40.8% and 72.1% Q1 declines.
However, silver hallmarked pieces soared 32.8% to 214,697 for the period, a swing of roughly 60% from February’s 27.9% year-on-year decrease.
