The total number of hallmarked pieces climbed 64.4% to 1,009,071 in September 2021, up from 613,679 for the same period in 2020.

According to the Birmingham Assay Office, silver saw the largest increase in hallmarked pieces, jumping 104.1% year-on-year.

While the 584,551 hallmarked silver pieces in September 2021 represented the largest volume of hallmarked pieces, gold followed in second with 390,638.

Up from 294,451 in September 2020, the number of gold hallmarked pieces saw a slightly lower 32.7% year-on-year spike.

Platinum hallmarked pieces also increased 3.3% to 33,361 in September, against last year’s 32,297.

The only metal to see a fall in hallmarked pieces was palladium, which declined 1.7% year-on-year to 521 pieces in September 2021.
