A gang of thieves wielding machetes and a sword smashed their way into a Fleet Street watch boutique this morning, taking an unknown quantity of watches from the store.

The gang stormed the Chronext shop – a short distance from the Royal Courts of Justice – on scooters during business hours earlier this morning, reportedly smashing through the glass doors of the premises with a moped before threatening staff, smashing cases, and making off with watches.

Terrifying footage taken from what appears to be an office window on the other side of the street shows the attack was executed quickly, but Twitter users said police took at as long as 35 minutes to arrive on the scene after the minutes-long assault.

Police at the scene told Jewellery Focus the robbery took place this morning and when asked if any of the perpetrators had been caught, said  “enquiries are still ongoing”.

This is a breaking news story. More detail to follow.
