The largest-ever iteration of the Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show has opened its doors this morning at the AsiaWorld Expo exhibition centre near Hong Kong Airport.

The show this year – which was attended by Jewellery Focus’ editor Michael Northcott – offers two developments on previous years: a new section devoted to exhibitors for lab-grown diamonds and synthetic gemstones; and new international exhibitors from Belize and Turkey, representing those countries at the show for the first time.

Taking up nearly the entire AsiaWorld Expo centre, the event is split into three themed zones:

  • Hall of Fine Diamonds – for quality diamonds of all carat sizes, cuts and colours, including rare-coloured stones
  • Treasures of Nature – for precious coloured gemstones of different origins
  • Treasures of the Ocean – for quality pearls from the South Seas Tahiti, and other pearl centres

It runs concurrently with the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show which starts two days later across the harbour in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Between them the two shows this year have attracted 4,500 exhibitors from around 50 different countries and regions, creating what organisers call “the world’s largest jewellery marketplace”.

Hong Kong is at the centre of a booming jewellery trade in Asia, boasting $22.8bn in jewellery and related exports last year, up 14.2% on 2016.
