Non-essential shops in Leicester will be able to reopen again on Friday 24 July, the government has confirmed.
The local lockdown imposed on Leicester following a spike in coronavirus cases will begin to be eased from 24 July, although not all businesses on the high street will be allowed to reopen straight away.
While schools and non-essential shops will be allowed to reopen, pubs, restaurants and cafes will remain closed as the city continues to mitigate the risk of a surge in coronavirus infections, health secretary Matt Hancock announced yesterday (16 July).
He also told MPs that councils would be given local powers to close non-essential shops where necessary.
Hancock also announced changes to the lockdown boundary, with the restrictions only applying to the city of Leicester and the borough of Oadby and Wigston from 24 July.
