Hallmarking figures up 10% in April

The total number of hallmarked articles grew 10% in April following a disappointing March, according to new figures released from all four of the UK’s assay offices. 

According to the data, which was compiled by the Birmingham Assay Office , there was a total of 810,831 articles hallmarked in April compared with 737,316 in April last year.

During the month, gold reported a strong performance with 22-carat gold soaring 49.5%, 18-carat was up 14.8% while 14-carat gold was up 37.9%. In total, gold reported a 13.2% increase in articles hallmarked – up 47,117 on the same time last year.

Silver was also up with a total of 20,159 more articles hallmarked across all categories, representing an increase of 5.8%.

Meanwhile, platinum figures soared during the month to 30.2%, from 20,935 hallmarked articles last year to 27,249 this year. Palladium was the only category to record a dip with the total number of hallmarked articles down 0.7%, to 10,550.
