Hallmarking climbs 84.5% in August

The total number of hallmarked pieces climbed 84.5% to 784,078 in August 2021, up from 424,994 in August 2020.

According to the Birmingham Assay Office, silver saw the largest increase in hallmarket pieces, jumping 87% year-on-year.

While the 380,797 hallmarked silver pieces in August 2021 represented the largest volume of hallmarked pieces, gold followed in second with 365,664.

Up from 197,045 in August 2020, the number of gold hallmarked pieces saw a slightly lower 85.6% year-on-year spike.

Platinum hallmarked pieces also increased 61.1% to 37,214 in August, against last year’s 23,098.

The only metal to see a fall in hallmarked pieces was palladium, which declined 64.5% year-on-year to 403 pieces in August 2021.
