Hallmarking drops 24% in April

These figures represent another consecutive month of decline in hallmarking after March saw a decrease of 35.9%

The number of items hallmarked in the UK from the four UK Assay Offices fell 24% in April 2023 compared with April 2022.

All four of the Assay offices collectively hallmarked 245,583 pieces of silver in April 2023, down from 349,654 in the same period in 2022, a drop of 30%.

Gold hallmarking also dropped 20% from 280,067 in 2022 to 224,355 in 2023. However, gold 999 saw an increase of 77.3% from 696 to 1,234 pieces hallmarked.

Furthermore, the hallmarking of platinum also dropped by 3.5% from 29,890 to 28,833.

The biggest drop was seen in palladium which had a drop in hallmarking of 46%, from 660,006 to 498,985.

These figures represent another consecutive month of decline in hallmarking after March saw a decrease of 35.9%.

Some variations of metals saw huge increases with silver 999 seeing a 237% increase in hallmarking, platinum 999 seeing a 363% increase and platinum 900 seeing a 678% increase.
