Bonham’s global jewellery department sees record H1 2023

Bonham’s global jewellery department has seen a record number of sales in H1 2023 after holding 40 auctions in the period compared with just 24 in the same period last year.

Bonhams has also retained its position as market leader in the UK, for the 13th consecutive year.

The company sold 6,428 individual lots in the first half with some of the top lots including a Leviev emerald-cut diamond ring which sold for $2.7m (£2.1m) and a Fancy Pink diamond ring which sold for $1.2m (£0.93m).

Jean Ghika, global director jewellery, said: “Bonhams jewellery continues to see growth and success across the globe. As a market leader, we offer a diverse mix of period jewels, rare gemstones, and exceptional diamonds.

The company is optimistic about the second half of the year following a strong auction in Los Angeles where a 321-lot sale made a total of $1,884,580 ( £1,467,315) with 89% of the items sold by lot and 100% sold by value.

“With an increase in registrations for our sales in 2023 of 39%, we have seen success at all price points from £500 to multimillion figures. With the 40% growth in auctions both online and live and with the addition of The Weekly: Jewelry, Bonhams Jewellery has successfully broadened the scope and offering to our clientele.”

She added: “The jewellery results build on Bonhams overall success. This month the company announced 32% growth in 2023 with global sales achieving more than $550,000,000 from January to June 2023, the best-ever results for the first half of the year in the company’s history.”

Bonhams has 14 jewellery salerooms located globally in London, Paris, New York, Los
Angeles, Hong Kong, and Sydney.
