The total number of items hallmarked by the four UK Assay Offices dropped 18.8% in January.
In total 5,02,620 pieces of jewellery were hallmarked in January 2025 compared with 6,18,881 in 2024, a decline of 1,16,221.
Gold hallmarking increased 1.3% from 2,37,136 pieces hallmarked up to 2,40,110.
However, gold 990 and 999 saw a 100% and 82.5% decrease in hallmarking numbers respectively, while gold 916 saw a 14.1% increase compared with last year.
Meanwhile, the total number of silver pieces hallmarked saw a decline of 34.8% from 3,53,900 down to 2,30,697.
Despite the overall decrease in the silver category, silver 800 recorded the biggest increase of 150%.
Additionally, platinum saw an increase in hallmarking of 13.9% from 27,350 to 31,142, while palladium saw a decrease of 18.8% from 6,18,881 to 5,02,620.
The four UK Assay Offices are based in Birmingham, Sheffield, London and Edinburgh.
