The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will introduce redesigned coloured stone reports and expand its country-of-origin determination services from 1 January 2026.

The institute said the updated reports will feature a revised layout intended to present key gemological information more clearly.

The changes are designed to make it easier for the trade and consumers to understand the characteristics of individual stones.

GIA will also extend its origin-determination services to include opal, peridot and demantoid garnet.

These additions build on existing country-of-origin services for alexandrite, emerald, Paraíba tourmaline, red spinel, ruby and sapphire, as well as untreated jadeite jade and omphacite jade from Myanmar (Burma) or Guatemala.

Alongside the report changes, GIA will revise weight categories and associated fees for coloured stone submissions. Full details of the new structure will be published on GIA.edu on 1 January 2026.

The revised weight categories, fees and redesigned reports will apply to coloured stones submitted on or after that date.

Shane McClure, global director of coloured stone services at GIA, said: “Our expanded services are based on GIA’s extensive research and collection of 32,000 samples collected by GIA field gemologists.

“The Institute started coloured stone reporting more than 75 years ago, and since then researchers and gemologists across our laboratories have developed an industry-leading knowledge.”
