The Birmingham Assay Office has joined the chorus of statistics showing recent growth in hallmarking, with figures that show total number of items hallmarked at all four UK assay offices have risen by 9.8 per cent since September last year.
The biggest year-on-year growth was in 14 carat gold, which rose 64.1 per cent, with gold overall rising 10 per cent. The only category within gold that showed a decrease was 24 carat gold which fell 44.4 per cent.
Precious metals in general, however, also showed growth. Figures revealed silver is up by 9.8 per cent, platinum up by 8.7 and palladium up by 4 per cent.
The Birmingham Assay office said: “This is a promising start to the peak trading season.” The quarterly figures released also showed there was a small uplift of 2.8 per cent in the third quarter when compared to the same period in 2012.
