Two pieces of jewellery that belonged to mystery writer Agatha Christie have surpassed their pre sale estimates at a Bonhams auction by £36,375.

The auction which took place October 8 saw Christie’s diamond brooch, estimated between £6,000 and £8,000, sell for £27,500.

The second piece, a three-stone diamond engagement ring, sold for £21,875, beating its value of £3,000 to £5,000 by £16,875.

The diamond ring was bought by writer Sophie Kinsella’s husband as a surprise for his wife.

Commenting on the gift, Kinsella said: “I was bowled over by this incredible surprise. Agatha Christie is the hugest [sic] inspiration and source of pleasure to me. I’ve read all her books, many times over and I feel very moved at the idea of having a piece of jewellery that was once hers.”
