A new security system that uses expanding foam to cover items of jewellery has been launched.

The product, dubbed ‘Medusa’ was designed by Hilaire O’Shea, and assisted by co-founder of SaferGems and former CEO of the National Association of Goldsmiths (NAG), Michael Hoare. The solution fills cabinet displays with a rapidly expanding foam that encloses jewellery in a high-density material in the event that a break in occurs.

The foam is said to make it “impossible” for thieves to grab individual items and to transport them.

According to an official statement, while smoke and vapour systems still leave valuable jewellery “vulnerable to some extent”, Medusa works differently by blocking access to valuables and then preventing their removal from the scene of the crime.

The company hopes that the Medusa head logo will become a common sight in jewellery stores and act as a deterrent to potential thieves.
