UK hallmarking falls 4.1% in February

The number of pieces hallmarked in the UK fell 4.1% in February compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Birmingham Assay Office.
The total number of pieces hallmarked was 549,539, down from 572,890 last year and comes after hallmarking was flat in January.
The total number of silver pieces hallmarked fell 8.4% from 288,603 down to 264,310.
The most popular silver, 925, also saw a decline of 8.4% from 285,539 down to 261,430.
Despite this, gold hallmarking actually saw a small uptick of 1.8% from 256,176 up to 260,662.
Gold 375 saw an increase of 9% from 152,666 pieces hallmarked up to 166,344.
Platinum had the steepest decline of any of the metals, from 27,662 down 23,949, a decrease of 13.4%.
