North East gallery launches jewellery showcase
The Biscuit Factory – the UK’s largest independent art, craft and design gallery in Newcastle’s Ouseburn Valley – has presented a new jewellery collection inspired by the theme of ‘play’.
The collection features makers whose work has a “playful quality”, with highlights including include statement jewellery by Norfolk-based Jane Sedgwick using hand turned sycamore from her sustainably managed woodland, inspired by classic educational toys; and Emily Kidson’s bright colour palette that blends jewels and bold materials such as silver, gold, wood and laminate with traditional craftsmanship.
Smith and Gibbs’ enamelled pieces in contemporary shapes and colours are inspired by the vintage postage stamps from her grandparents’ love letters to one another; and Jo Lavelle’s pom pom rings are made from clusters of individual silver shapes that move independently.
Jewellery curator, Maike Browning, said: “I wanted to showcase a broad selection of jewellers working with a variety of materials and techniques, but all with a sense of joy and freedom. It’s important to me to choose work that is exquisitely made, so I have selected jewellers who craft their work with care and attention to detail. Each item of jewellery in this collection is meticulously made and I think this really shines through.”
Alongside this specially curated collection, visitors will also find a handpicked selection of the gallery’s favourite makers who work with a variety of innovative jewellery-making techniques and unique materials.
The gallery’s handmade jewellery collection is one of the largest in Newcastle. Every piece is available to purchase, with many jewellers also able to work to commission to create something truly personal and extra special for occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries and weddings.
