Increases in consumer enquiries about the commissioning process have led to Craft Finder creating its ‘Guide to Commissioning’, which gives customers hints and tips on how find a jeweller and how to work with a designer to create an original piece of jewellery.

Myia Bonner is a contemporary jeweller designer featured on the Craft Finder site. “Designing a commissioned piece of jewellery can be quite an intimate process, as you are working closely with someone to produce something special that has a sentimental value to them,” she said.

“One customer asked me to produce a pendant that featured a copy of his tattoo, as he wanted to give it to his fiancée. Customers seem happy to invest a bit more to create an original piece that’s long-lasting. It doesn’t matter if the client doesn’t have an exact idea of what they want, I’m happy to work with them to make sure the right piece emerges from the creative process.”

Craft Finder’s guide contains seven steps for consumers to follow, namely: think carefully about the person you’re buying for; decide on your maker; agree the brief; agree a budget; sort the specifics; agree on a deadline; and leave feedback when all is said and done.
