Designed by Fiona Alexander, the garden supports W Hamond’s work to educate consumers in the story and history of British gemstones, and to remind them to make the most of the beautiful country we live in – not only through the natural materials, but also through showcasing British manufacturing talents.

The garden depicts the evolution of the Whitby Jet gemstone – a journey which commences in Jurassic beginnings as the wood of the Araucaria (Araucana or Monkey Puzzle) tree, and continues through the fossilisation process, to end with the jeweller who reveals its striking black beauty in the form of a gemstone.

The RHS Flower Show Tatton Park takes place from 25 to 28 July 2013.
