Former Bonhams watch specialist Paul Maudsley has been appointed international specialist and director of a new London watches department at Phillips auction house.

The appointment comes after Phillips’ successful inaugural watch auction, held in Geneva, which broke numerous records and achieved 29.6 million Swiss Francs (£20.5m).

Maudsley has 16 years experience in UK watch auctions and has handled the sale of over 20,000 timepieces across three different continents throughout his career, achieving numerous record prices.

He says that having been a keen collector of watches from age 13 has helped him to develop a “love and broad knowledge of horology across all areas of watches and wristwatches”.

Aurel Bacs, senior consultant at Phillips, said: “We warmly welcome Paul Maudsley to the team and look forward to working with him on the lead up to our sales this [autumn] on 7-8 November in Geneva and our inaugural watch auction in Hong Kong taking place on 1 December.

“Our existing team of passionate specialists has already demonstrated their strength with the outstanding results from the May auctions in Geneva and will further benefit from Paul’s knowledge and expertise.”

Maudsley joins Phillips’ international team of watch specialists including Kate Lacey, specialist based in London, Paul Boutros, international strategy advisor in New York and Jill Chen, business development director, who will be based in a Hong Kong office set to open in August.
