The 5.03ct ‘Aurora Green’ diamond has gone under the hammer for $16.8m (£11.7m) – a world auction record for a green diamond.

The rectangular-cut fancy vivid green diamond was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong Spring Sales of Magnificent Jewels for more than $3.3m (£2.3m) per carat.

In total, the auction realised $85m (£58.9m), breaking three further world records; the $11.6m (£8m) sale of a pair of ruby ear pendants, a $7.2m (£5m) Kashmir sapphire bracelet by Cartier; and a jadeite pendant necklace by Wallace Chan, which achieved $967,000 (£670,000).

Vickie Sek, deputy chairman Asia and director of Christie’s Asia jewellery department, said: “On our 30th anniversary we were pleased to offer our clients the very best in the world of jewels which was exemplified by four new world auction records.

“All together this was a $85m (£58.9m) week of jewellery sales for Christie’s Hong Kong and we look forward to offering collectors new treasures in the fall.”
