Alrosa suspends Natural Diamond Council membership

The announcement follows the recent announcement that Alrosa voluntarily stepped down from its position as vice-chair of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC)

The Natural Diamond Council (NDC) has announced that Alrosa has stepped down from the board and will cease all financial contributions to the organisation amid the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

The NDC said its board of directors of the Natural Diamond Council received Alrosa’s decision to suspend its membership last week.

The announcement follows the recent announcement that Alrosa voluntarily stepped down from its position as vice-chair of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), temporarily leaving the board of directors.

The NDC said: “As an organisation, our thoughts remain with people impacted by the current geopolitical crisis.”

Meanwhile, in a statement last week, the RJC said its team is supporting its 1,500 international members with guidance to comply with all applicable sanctions, together with the RJC COP requirements on due diligence within their supply chains.

David Bouffard, RJC chair, said: “Like so many, we are deeply saddened by the geopolitical situation in connection with the Ukraine crisis.

“The RJC will continue to closely monitor the situation in accordance with international regulations and update its members with guidance as it evolves.”
