The Goldsmith’s Company has appointed Dr Dora Thornton as curator of its collection of antique and contemporary silver, modern jewellery and art medals.

She will take up her role in March 2018, and is joining the company from a distinguished career at the British Museum.

Thornton said: “I greatly look forward to joining the Goldsmiths’ Company as it launches an ambitious programme leading up to the celebration of the 700th anniversary of its first royal charter in 2027.

“The company is committed to expanding its wide-ranging support for contemporary silver and jewellery as well as to opening its important historic collection to a wider audience.

“Its recent commitment to become a founding partner of the new Museum of London to be built in Smithfield presents a unique opportunity to develop still further the company’s impressive contribution to our national life. It is an exciting prospect.”
