The National Association of Jewellers (NAJ) has named Gary Wroe, managing director of Hockley Mint, as the winner of the 2025 NAJ Chair’s Award.
The award recognises his long-standing contribution to the UK jewellery industry, and was presented at the Benevolent Society Christmas Ball at the Grand Hotel in Birmingham on Thursday 4 December.
Now in its fifth year, the NAJ Chair’s Award honours individuals or organisations whose influence and commitment have made a lasting impact on the trade.
Story Stream: More on Hockley Mint
According to NAJ, Wroe has been a prominent figure in British jewellery manufacturing for more than 40 years, known for his leadership at Hockley Mint and extensive voluntary service across multiple industry bodies.
Wroe began his career at 16 on the British Jewellers’ Association Youth Training Scheme.
He went on to join Hockley Mint, becoming production manager at 25 and, later, managing director at 36.
During his tenure, the company strengthened its ethical credentials, advanced its sustainability work, and transitioned to employee ownership.
Alongside his commercial role, he has contributed extensively to the governance and development of the industry, serving as a director of the British Allied Trades Federation, trustee of the Benevolent Society, warden of the Birmingham Assay Office, liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths and member of the British Hallmarking Council.
He is also a former chair and president of both the NAJ and the British Jewellers’ Association.
Adam Jacobs, NAJ chair, said: “Gary’s contribution to the British jewellery industry cannot be overstated. His leadership in manufacturing, his support for developing talent, and his long record of voluntary service exemplify the values of our trade. It is a privilege to recognise his achievements with the 2025 Chair’s Award.”
Wroe added: “I am deeply honoured to receive the NAJ Chair’s Award. This industry has shaped my life since I first entered a workshop at 16. Supporting young jewellers and contributing to the institutions that underpin our sector has been a privilege. I am grateful to the Association, my colleagues and the wider trade.”
