BAJ launches interactive online training

The British Academy of Jewellery (BAJ) has announced the launch of its first interactive online training courses, in line with its commitment to provide high-level technical training for jewellers. The association said the new online course portfolio also reflects its commitment to “responding to the evolving needs” of the industry, and broadening access to jewellery education. Industry professionals can further their skills and knowledge in a selected area through the new course that can be completed whilst working from home. Students will study in small groups through the BAJ's interactive digital learning platform, with training delivered through a format that combines live expert instruction, discussions, tutorials and Q&A's. Students will also receive individual feedback on their projects from tutors in order to “achieve effective skill progression”. They can also interact with other course participants. The first online short course will be entitled Jewellery Retail Essentials, and provides an introduction to the materials, techniques and terminology of fine jewellery. Other topics covered by the course include jewellery history, the domestic and international jewellery markets, fine jewellery production, gemmology, jewellery components, metallurgy, precious metals, hallmarking, and proper jewellery care. The BAJ said the range of content on “in-demand” areas in jewellery retail makes it an “ideal introduction” for beginners or as a refresher for more experienced jewellers. Kate Rieppel, head of academy at BAJ, said: "We are delighted to be launching interactive online training at the British Academy of Jewellery, which includes a unique provision of live tuition and individual support from BAJ tutors. “While this remains a difficult period for the jewellery community, we hope to support the industry by providing opportunities for the next generation of jewellers to continue to further their skills from home." The course will begin on 11 June and runs over three days. Course fees are £299 per student and learners will receive a BAJ certificate upon completing the course. Other online courses will be added on a rolling basis. Additional online courses offered by BAJ include the De Beers Diamond Certificate, in partnership with De Beers Institute of Diamonds.
