The report states that Lena Paahlsson had long given up hope of finding the diamond-set white gold ring, which went missing in her kitchen in 1995.

Mrs Paahlsson, who lives on a farm near Mora in central Sweden, reportedly last saw the ring when she removed it ahead of doing some Christmas baking with her daughters.

In the years since its disappearance the family had searched low and high for the wedding band to no avail.

Recently, as Paahlsson was removing carrots in her garden, she noticed one with the ring fastened tightly around it.

“The carrot was sprouting in the middle of the ring. It is quite incredible,” Paahlsson’s husband Ola remarked to a local newspaper.

The couple believe the ring fell into a sink and got lost in vegetable peelings that were turned into compost or fed to their sheep.

“I had given up hope,” Paahlsson told Dagens Nyheter.

“Now that I have found the ring again I want to be able to use it!”
