Police in London have launched a manhunt after raiders accessed safety deposit boxes in a vault using ‘heavy cutting equipment’ over the Easter bank holiday weekend.

Officers were called to Hatton Garden on Tuesday (April 7) morning at approximately 8:10am after reports of a burglary at a safety deposit business in London’s jewellery district.

It is believed that heavy cutting cutting equipment had been used on the deposit boxes but it is not yet known how many boxes were accessed by the raiders.

A statement from the police said “It appears that heavy cutting equipment has been used to get into a vault at the address, and a number of safety deposit boxes have been broken into.

“The Flying Squad is investigating and detectives are currently at the scene.”

Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or call the Flying Squad directly on 020 8785 8655.
