A man has been charged following a robbery at a jewellery store in Derby’s Intu shopping centre.

The break-in happened at about 3am on Tuesday, August 23, at the Ernest Jones store in the shopping centre. An unknown quantity of jewellery was stolen but later recovered by police.

A 21-year-old man, of no fixed address, has been charged with burglary with intent to steal and was due to appear before magistrates in Derby today (24 August).

Shortly before the burglary a number of fires, in the area of the Cockpit and Bradshaw Way, were reported to the emergency services. Police are continuing enquiries into the fires and the burglary to see if they are linked.

Police said investigations at the scene are complete but officers are in the process of checking CCTV in the area.

A spokesperson from Signet Jewelers, the parent company of Ernest Jones, said: “Our efforts are currently focused upon ensuring the welfare of our staff and we’ll be spending time with each of them to offer them counselling following this robbery.”

Derbyshire Constabulary believes a number of people were involved in the burglary and have appealed for help from the public.

Police said they would like to hear from anyone who was in Derby between 2am and 5am yesterday morning (23 August) and saw anything.

Anyone with information has been urged to contact Detective Constable Paul Beautyman on 101 quoting reference 16000246951, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
