Asquiths Jewellers on Goodramgate in York is set to close in April due to falling footfall and an increase in rent.
The store, which also has a Darlington branch that is not set to close, has been trading in the city for 24 years but will not be renewing its lease following rent increases.
The company told Minster FM in York that a lack of footfall in the area and the council’s focus on bigger chains, like restaurants and cafes, means it just can’t stay open any longer.
Speaking to Minster FM, Fiona Grey, Asquiths co-owner, said: “There’s been a general decline in trade for a period mainly down to the council’s attitude. Lack of parking and parking charges have put people off coming to the area. That combined with the landlord wanting to renew the lease with much higher rent, it’s just not viable anymore.
“We are very, very sad. We’ve loved being in York and have some fantastic staff and we’re really heartbroken to see them go. They are good, loyal people.”
The York branch will have a closing down sale and is expected to close by 3 April.
