A jewellery store in Shrewsbury is set to close its doors this month after being a fixture in the town for almost 20 years.

Gemstone Jewellery first opened in the town’s Darwin shopping centre some 18 years ago, and after 11 years the store moved to its current location on Castle Street where it stocks handmade jewellery with semi-precious and precious gemstones.

The husband-and-wife team behind the business, Dave and Kathy Forshaw, started creating jewellery “many years ago” as a hobby and after attending craft fairs the business grew from there.

However, they have now decided not to renew their lease after being unable to agree on the terms they wanted with the owners of the property.

Kathy Forshaw told Jewellery Focus: “We’ve been in business for over 25 years and we have been in this shop for five years. We would have liked a rolling lease after the first five years but unfortunately they wanted to tie us in. We’re not willing to do that.”

The store is set to close within the next couple of weeks, after all of its cabinets, counters and display furniture have been sold at a discount rate. There are also some discounts on the store’s jewellery.

The couple are now planning to take their business online and sell jewellery from their home.
