The total number of pieces hallmarked in May of 2021 soared by 212% when compared with May 2020 during the first lockdown, according to the latest figures from the Birmingham Assay Office.
Some 496,964 pieces were hallmarked in May 2021, up from the 159,299 pieces hallmarked in May of last year.
Gold hallmarked pieces for May sat at 254,955, up 405.3% against the 50,464 gold hallmarked pieces reported in 2020.
Silver hallmarked pieces also increased exponentially, rising 110.1% to 212,299 pieces up from 101,064.
In addition, the number of platinum hallmarked totalled 29,394, marking a 306.3% increase against last year’s figures.
Palladium was the only metal to see a decrease in hallmarking over the period. A total of 276 palladium pieces were reported in May 2021, marking a 48.5% decline from 536 the prior year.
