The construction of the new assay office building in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter is starting to take shape.

The new site, located within the St George’s development in Icknield Street, now has its steel skeleton structure in place.

Founded in 1773 by Matthew Boulton, a leading industrialist, the current Grade II building is now 137 years old. It has been extended and added to several times during its history, but is now a maze of different working areas. This has necessitated the move into a new building to allow the Assay Office Birmingham to continue to grow.

It is hoped that the new building will offer better facilities and personal security to staff and customers and also will enable wider public access to its library and silver collection.
