Reading-based Jacobs the Jewellers has announced the winners of its annual ‘Young Designer’ competition.

The competition, which is held in association with the Bishopsland Educational Trust, HS Walsh and the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, saw four young jewellery designers at Bishopsland – a jewellery design postgraduate course provider – showcase one piece of silver and one piece of jewellery at the store, competing for the best design in each category.

Over 100 public votes were cast between the young Bishopsland-based jewellery designers exhibiting their designs in Jacobs’ Reading shop throughout June.

Votes were put forward for two categories, favourite jewellery design and preferred silver object design.

Susan Macleod was awarded with the winning jewellery design for her ‘Wild Sweetpea Necklace’, while Elizabeth Hendricks won the winning silver design for her ‘tea light holder’.

Each designer was awarded a framed presentation certificate and £500 worth of vouchers to spend on tools or materials to help establish their careers in the jewellery and silver industry.

Ian Jacobs, owner, said: “Our customers loved the pieces on show this year and we are thrilled with the positive feedback we get for supporting creative young talent. I thoroughly hope the designers take the experience gained by exhibiting their work in our shop to further progress their careers.”
