Tom Wood has launched its new Chiyu Ring collection in collaboration with long-time friend and Japanese fashion insider Kozue Akimoto.

Titled Chiyu, the Japanese word for “healing”, the collaboration features a duo of rings designed to be worn together as a “sort of supportive armour”.

Directly inspired by the concept of regeneration and renewal, the idea was born during a meeting in Tokyo last year between Tome Wood creative director Mona Jensen and Kozue, when the latter wore a cast after breaking her finger.

The rings, which are made of recycled sterling silver, celebrates decade-long friendship and shared creative vision and commitment to transformative design.

The Chiyu rings are designed to be worn with layering in mind, or as a singular unit, across the lower or upper part of the finger, creating a bespoke appearance.

Kozue said: “Chiyu contains various meanings and feelings for me. The original idea came from healing an injury which is why we decided on Chiyu as the name of the project. It means healing, treatment and recovery from an injury. But it can also mean regeneration and renewal, the improvement of something old.”

Jensen, founder and designer of Tom Wood, added: “I love the concept of silver as protective armour, especially given its historical association with guarding against evil. I’m drawn to objects that carry deeper meanings.

“The idea itself was simple, but turning it into something wearable for everyone was a bit of a challenge. It took some time in our studio to develop a new sizing system that would allow the rings to be styled in different ways, depending on where you choose to wear them on your finger.”
