Warning as shoppers take to Facebook to share dismay at ‘1p’ sales

CTS Retail was shown images of shoes being reduced from £16 to £15 and cosmetics from £3.25 to £3.24 and this raises questions as to whether or not these stores are merely trying to attract more people into the store by claiming there is a sale.

Managing director of CTS Retail Scott Storey said: “It is interesting that retailers would bother to reduce items by 1p and label them up so significantly. It may be a simple oversight, with many more products attracting much bigger discounts, but that’s not really the point. What’s important here is that customers have noticed it, are not impressed by it and have shared their frustration with their peer group.”

Storey believes that Facebook and Twitter are becoming focal points for retailers to communicate with customers and that “retailers need to be careful not to abuse the trust they have built up with their customer base by offering inappropriate promotions.”
