That was until AS Saint Etienne forward Pierre Emerick Aubameyang wore his latest crystal-covered boots during a pre-match warm-up before a match against Lyon.
The Gabonese-French footballer donned a pair of Orravan Design’s 5,000 Swarovski crystal encrusted Nike Mercurial boots, costing £2,500 – attracting considerable media attention.
“Today, the new ‘Aubame’ trainers are one of the most impressive examples of our work – but hopefully not the highest level of what we can do and provide to our clients,” said founder and creative director of the Paris-based designer, Pierre Navarro.
“Creating exceptional trainers starting from a regular consumer product and changing the vision and attitudes of clients over sneakers – showing them that it can be a real high fashion product – has been a daily challenge for us since 2007. But with the support of the Swarovski organisation since 2006, we have constantly elevated our creativity and craftsmanship.”
Pierre started the company in 2007, and since then it has gathered pace until 2012 saw the company’s first showroom open in Paris’s downtown 3rd district.
Orravan Design’s range of sneakers and boots has been gathering fans all over the world, with rapper Lil Wayne wearing a pair at the BET Awards in 2009 and Brazilian footballer Robinho wearing a pair in the same year – as well as Thierry Henry, Didier Drogba and Ronaldinho.
Having its work worn by some of football and music’s biggest stars has not tempered the aspirations of the company, however, as the founder now wants to find a luxury jeweller to share in the company’s vision.
“As a creative spirit in terms of new techniques and technologies to develop our products, I must say that I would love to find a serious partner in the fine jewellery industry to create a range of sneakers and fashion accessories.
“And, why not the very first sneaker-inspired shoe on earth, made with gemstones and precious metal?”
