Merrell Casting has introduced Single Mine Origin (SMO) gold to its range of ethically sourced metals, expanding its offering for the jewellery sector.

The Birmingham-based casting specialist, a sister company of Hockley Mint, said the addition supports its commitment to traceable and responsibly sourced materials. Its existing range includes Fairtrade and Fairmined gold, as well as bespoke alloys such as green gold and champagne gold.

SMO gold can be traced back to a single certified mine, ensuring a transparent chain of custody from extraction to delivery. Each batch is segregated, independently audited, and issued with a QR code to confirm its source.

SMO-accredited mines follow internationally recognised responsibility standards and publish sustainability reports annually, along with quarterly updates on environmental and social improvements.

Merrell Casting continues to support Fairtrade Gold, which guarantees fair pricing and safer working conditions for artisanal miners, and Fairmined Gold, which certifies small-scale mining associations that meet strict social and environmental standards.

The company said it also repurposes all gold waste and offcuts in production, ensuring its gold use is fully recycled and reducing the need for raw extraction.

The introduction of SMO gold forms part of wider sustainability measures by Hockley Mint and Merrell Casting. The group has installed more than 500 solar panels on its factory roof, generating renewable energy to power production.

According to the company, the system has helped save 105 tonnes of standard coal and 262 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, while harvesting 60,000 litres of rainwater.

Gary Wroe, managing director said: “Adding SMO to the portfolio of metals we supply ensures we are offering the full range of choice for our clients. The company has been at the forefront of ensuring the respected gold schemes are accessible to all.”
