The Goldsmiths’ Company today launched a new free-to-view online directory, in an effort to encourage consumers to buy direct from UK jewellers and silversmiths.

The Goldsmiths’ Directory supersedes the company’s ‘Who’s Who in Gold and Silver’ website, which launched in 2002, and showcases the work of over 350 UK-based jewellers and silversmiths.

Visitors to the website can search for particular designer-makers or input key words relating to materials, styles and crafting techniques. All search results will appear as images which can be clicked on for further information.

The website will be regularly updated with news from individual makers and will features covering an array of different topics.

David Mills, head of communications at The Goldsmiths Company, said: “Over the last decade, Who’s Who has been a great success, attracting thousands of visitors every year and leading to countless sales. But The Goldsmiths Directory is a major step forward in our campaign to modernise the Company’s online presence to best support the trade going forward.

“The Directory is a natural partner for the new Goldsmiths Fair website, which launched earlier this year. Together these sites will help to drive business to makers across the UK while raising awareness about original design and craftsmanship.”

Designer-makers who wish to be listed on the Goldsmiths directory are first vetted by an expert panel assembled by The Goldsmiths Company. The panel inspects physical objects submitted as part of the application process, as well as biographical information, professional qualifications and documentary photography.
