American Express supports SMEs with ‘Small Business Saturday’

American Express has launched a marketing campaign to support small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) ahead of Small Business Saturday.

Small Business Saturday, which takes place on December 6, is an initiative that aims to “support, inspire and promote” small business across the UK.

American Express – founder of Small Business Saturday in the US and supporter of the grassroots campaign in the UK – plans to build on the success of the events debut year last year with a high impact marketing campaign.

The annual event will include a ‘Shop Small’ promotion running from December 6 to December 21, to incentivise cardholders to spend in their local, independent stores. The offer rewards Cardmembers with a £5 statement credit when they spend £10 or more on their Card at participating small businesses.

American Express will also run a national advertising marketing campaign that will call on consumers to “Think Big, Shop Small” and it also plans to collaborate with high profile talent from the creative industries to shine spotlight on small business.

Mark Roper, head of merchant services UK at American Express, said: “American Express recognises the vital contribution small businesses make to the UK economy and the communities in which we all live and work, which is why we are delighted to be supporting Small Business Saturday again this year.

“With our high profile marketing campaign and the Shop Small promotion, we hope to build on last year’s success and encourage even more people to shop small on 6 December and beyond.”
