The Association for Contemporary Jewellery (ACJ) has announced changes to its leadership and board structure, as Rebecca Skeels is appointed new chair.
Skeels is course director and senior lecturer at Birmingham City University, teaching in BA honours jewellery and objects. From starting her jewellery business in 1994 after graduating from the University of Wales, to obtaining an MA project by design from Central Saint Martins and a PGC in higher education from University for the Creative Arts, Skeels is now a senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Speaking on her appointment, Skeels said: “Stepping into this role is a distinct honour and privilege. My goal is to build upon the strong foundation that Terry is leaving in our hands, to navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead. We hope this will be the Association’s most ambitious chapter yet”.
Two new deputy chairs, Melanie Eddy and Anne Earls-Boylan, have also been appointed alongside Skeels to contribute towards ACJ’s ongoing strategy, ensuring its relevance to its community. Eddy and Earls-Boylan also both run their own creative businesses, alongside their careers in education.
The ACJ has also paid tribute to its former chair, Terry Hunt, for his work supporting the jewellery sector. With over 50 years’ experience as a jewellery maker and educator, he went on to become chair of the ACJ in 2010, dedicating his time to supporting successive teams of directors and mentored Early Career Representatives. Hunt will continue to remain on the board as a director.
Hunt said: “It’s been a great privilege to serve the Association for so long and to be involved with so many wonderful, creative people. Regarding legacy, I’m glad we have continuing members’ exhibitions and, as well as many UK-wide regional groups, we still attract members from across the world. My best wishes to Rebecca, Mel and Anne.”
