Hallmarking up 3.1% in October

All categories of silver saw an increase in hallmarking except silver 800, which saw a decrease of 88.6%

The total number of items hallmarked by the four UK Assay Offices has seen a 3.1% rise in October.

In total 867,971 pieces of jewellery were hallmarked in October 2023 compared with 841,693 in October 2022, an increase of 26,278.

However, gold hallmarking dropped 2.8% from 404,355 pieces hallmarked down to 393,128.

Gold 916 saw a 33% increase in hallmarking numbers but gold 375 saw a 8.2% decrease compared with last year.

Meanwhile, the total number of silver pieces hallmarked saw an increase, an increase of 9.4% from 401,606 up to 439,497.

All categories of silver saw an increase in hallmarking except silver 800, which saw a decrease of 88.6%.

Additionally, there was a slight decrease in hallmarking for platinum and palladium: 1.1% from 35,444 to 35,064 and 2.1% from 288 to 282, respectively.

The four UK Assay Offices are based in Birmingham, Sheffield, London and Edinburgh.
